Practical tools to stay safe from heatwaves wherever you are.

Daily checklist

0/7 done

Cool-roof advisor

  • Paint the roof white or add reflective sheets (cuts indoor heat 3–6°C).
  • Add a ceiling or foil insulation under the zinc.
  • Plant shade trees or creepers on the sun-facing wall.

Heat exhaustion

Heavy sweating, cold clammy skin, dizziness, weakness, nausea.

Do: move to shade, loosen clothes, sip water or ORS, cool with wet cloth.

Heatstroke — emergency

Hot dry skin, confusion, fainting, very high temperature.

Who is most at risk

  • Outdoor workers (okada, keke, builders): rest in shade every hour, drink water every 20 min.
  • Market traders: use umbrellas/canopies, wet cloth on neck, avoid 12pm–4pm sun.
  • School children: no outdoor assembly or sports at peak heat; refill water bottles.
  • Elderly & pregnant women: stay in ventilated rooms; check on them twice a day.

Beat the heat without power

  • Open windows on opposite sides at night for cross-ventilation; close them by 10am.
  • Paint zinc roofs white or use reflective sheets to cut indoor heat by 3–6°C.
  • Use clay pot (zeer pot) coolers for water and food.
  • Hang wet cloth in front of windows or fans for evaporative cooling.
  • Signs of heatstroke: confusion, no sweating, hot skin — call 112 immediately.
